Yunnan Baiyao in veterinary medicine

Yunnan Baiyao in veterinary medicine

Yunnan Baiyao was officially formulated and named in 1902, but the main herbs in it are being used for thousands of years. In ancient times, it was used to stop bleeding from combat injuries. More recently, in the human medical literature, its oral use has been to decrease the preoperative need for blood transfusions, and for ulcerative gastrointestinal disease. In regular households in China and some Asian countries, Yunnan Baiyao served as a first aid medicine used externally. Its name means “The white medicine from Yunnan province.”

In veterinary medicine Yunnan Baiyao has been shown to increase blood coagulation in 8 healthy research beagle dogs, and 18 client-owned, healthy dogs of various breeds that weighed less than 30 pounds. More and more veterinarians are recommending this medication for dogs and cats.

It is most used for cancer in pets.  Yunnan Baiyao for dogs with cancer may sound counter-initiative, but in certain cases, it is really useful.

Some canine cancers are associated with bleeding, like internal hemangiosarcomas. Hemangiosarcomas are tumors that occur in the linings of the blood vessels, this causes internal bleeding. Other types of cancers can bleed too. For example, sometimes chemotherapy drugs increase bleeding tendencies. Sometimes tumors rupture and bleed out. This is when Yunnan Baiyao come in handy. It’s a small capsule that can be given at home.

Studies had deemed it safe to use. How does it work? There is no exact answer yet.

We had many customers who order Yunnan Baiyao for solely this purpose. The feed back is positive.

Keep in mind that this remedy is not fully understood, and there are some veterinarians who just don’t think using it is worth it. But there are plenty who disagree and feel that as long as it’s safe, using it in serious cases is warranted.
